Abstract

This paper discusses the sociability circuits of men who have sex with men (MSM) in the Metropolitan Region of Recife (RMR). The data come from ethnographic research carried out through interviews, participant observations and a behavioral survey, with a sample formed by 10 chains of respondents. In smaller municipalities, close knit networks prevailed, which controlled people and stigmatized homosexuality. To escape control, homosociability took place in spaces such as friends' houses, beaches and squares. And, when they wanted the fun of the gay clubs and bars, they went to Recife. At the same time, the online dimension was accessed, cutting up the control and expanding erotic possibilities. Analyzing the fieldwork dynamics itself, we observed greater ease in building chains of respondents from poor neighborhoods in Olinda and Recife, which we relate to changes in the possibilities of showing oneself to be homosexual.
