Employing both qualitative and quantitative methods, the research scrutinized all the plenary speeches delivered by the congressman. The findings revealed that Bolsonaro consistently expressed concerns about birth control. Utilizing discourse analysis, it became evident that the former federal deputy's approach to the issue aimed to correlate population growth with an escalation of poverty, marginalization, and violence. Consequently, this perspective was closely tied to two pivotal semantic fields - moral conservatism and the combat against crime through a punitive approach - that played a crucial role in expanding his electoral base and securing victory in the 2018 elections.

2025-12-19T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Cadernos de Gênero e Diversidadehttps://periodicos.ufba.br/index.php/cadgendiv/article/view/66591Hierarquias de gênero e raça na elite parlamentar brasileira2025-06-05T11:10:22+00:00Luiza Aikawaluiza.asr@gmail.com
This article examines the expressions of the sexual division of political labor during the first legislative year of the 55th legislature in the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies. It aims to analyze how the sexual division influences the political actions of male and female deputies in terms of positions of political coordination, the themes they engage with, and their career trajectories in politics. The group of parliamentarians whose projects are prioritized and who actively participate in legislative work is fundamentally political, reflecting party disputes, survival strategies, and hierarchies in the organization of work. Discussing the outcomes of these disputes provides a better understanding of power relations both inside and outside the parliament, as well as the impact of gender roles in the process. The goal is not to explain the causes of gender inequality in politics, but to analyze its manifestation in parliamentary work and, consequently, in the hierarchies of the Brazilian political field.
2025-12-19T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Cadernos de Gênero e Diversidadehttps://periodicos.ufba.br/index.php/cadgendiv/article/view/65518Análise linguístico-discursiva da “masculinidade tóxica” em meios digitais2025-06-05T11:36:11+00:00Francisco Arkires Silva do Nascimentoarkiressilva52@gmail.comRafael Lima Vieirarafael.vieira@ifce.Edu.br
This article analyzes, from the perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), the linguistic-discursive processes that sustain toxic masculinity in digital interactions. The corpus comprises posts and comments from platforms such as X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok, adopting a qualitative approach based on theorists such as Fairclough (2001), Connell (2005), and Orlandi (2015). The findings reveal that social networks function as ideological arenas where patriarchal norms are amplified, reinforcing gender hierarchies. Comments that delegitimize emotional expression or promote hegemonic masculine stereotypes illustrate how these discursive practices restrict alternative male identities. The study concludes that toxic masculinity is upheld by discursive mechanisms that naturalize inequalities and inhibit social change. It emphasizes the need for discursive practices that encourage more inclusive forms of masculinity and highlights the importance of future research exploring strategies to deconstruct hegemonic narratives in digital environments.
2025-12-19T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Cadernos de Gênero e Diversidadehttps://periodicos.ufba.br/index.php/cadgendiv/article/view/66539O corpo gay que vive com HIV2025-09-16T20:26:43+00:00José Augusto Simões de Mirandajoseaugustosimoesdemiranda@gmail.com
This article aimed to analyze discourses from a campaign about HIV, produced by the Ministry of Health, involving gay male participants who live with HIV; understand how these identities, being gay and living with HIV, are represented — separately or overlapping — in the participants’ discourses; as well as discussing how the participants react to these identities. To make this possible, the study was carried out following a qualitative research methodology and the data was discussed in light of the theoretical-methodological approach of Critical Discourse Analysis, queer studies, and intersectionality. The results demonstrate that the participants' identities are represented overlapping, that is, there is an interrelationship — social and historical — between being gay and living with HIV. It is also seen that the participants react to these identities with resistance, giving new meaning to the stigmatizing discourses that have been (re)produced over the more than 40 years of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and that attempt to associate and marginalize the two social identities analyzed here.
2025-12-19T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Cadernos de Gênero e Diversidadehttps://periodicos.ufba.br/index.php/cadgendiv/article/view/54909Gender Roles and Unprotected Sex between Women and Men2025-08-20T10:56:33+00:00Isabella Zuardi Marquesisabellazuardimarques@gmail.comRodrigo Falcão Chaiserodrigofchaise@gmail.comKátia Bones Rochakatiabonesrocha@gmail.com
This study aimed to analyze the data found in the scientific literature about the association between gender roles and condom use in women who have sexual relations with men. An integrative literature review was conducted in Scopus, PubMed, Lilacs and PsycINFO databases, covering studies published between January 2015 and June 2021. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, the final sample was composed by 33 articles. The results of the articles indicate that traditional gender roles are associated with the difficulty faced by women in using condoms in sex with men. The aspects related to this difficulty were the following: conformity with a traditional sexual script and internalization of sexism; adherence to a submissive role in conjugality; fear of questioning male authority in the context of exposure to Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs); and the intersection between being a woman and other social markers, such as lower levels of education, financial dependence and age disparity with the partner. The findings of this literature review integrate research results carried out in different countries and provide contributions on components that should be prioritized in intervention strategies developed to promote safer sex between women and men.
2025-12-19T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Cadernos de Gênero e Diversidadehttps://periodicos.ufba.br/index.php/cadgendiv/article/view/53199Transgender people experiences with their families of origin2025-04-28T00:33:08+00:00Élvis Herrmann Boniniboninielvis@gmail.comIsadora Cechin Filipiackisadorafilipiack@gmail.comCláudia Mara Bosetto Cenciclaudia.cenci@atitus.edu.br
Transgender perception about the experiences of their families of origin is a wispy studied object of study. However, after entering Brazilian territory, they are faced with a series of adversities, involving various forms of violence. Objective: To analyze the violence experienced in Brazil by Venezuelan migrant transgender women. Methodology: Qualitative study, made in Manaus and Boa Vista, with transgender Venezuelan migrants. 9 individual semi-structured interviews were done online and 3 in-person focus groups, totaling 34 interviewees. Reflective thematic analysis was carried out. Results: Data categorized into: 1) (cis)cultural violence: overcoming territories and crushing dreams and (trans)expectations, which addresses violence resulting from cultural differences and the suppression of these women's aspirations; 2) Interpersonal violence: discrimination causing physical harm, which explores physical aggression and discrimination experienced in different contexts; 3) Strategies adopted as a way of fighting violence, which highlights the strategies acquired to deal with the violence they face. Conclusion: The intersectionality that involves being a migrant, poor and a transgender woman means that these women face many vulnerable situations, including new forms of violence, with few resources to face them, despite recognizing discrimination and transphobia as the main causes.
2025-12-19T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Cadernos de Gênero e Diversidadehttps://periodicos.ufba.br/index.php/cadgendiv/article/view/54645Old age and Homosexuality: The trajectory of elder lesbian women2025-09-16T18:12:11+00:00Fannya Souzafanny_talilia@hotmail.comIanara Holandaianara.holanda@gmail.comMichelle Diasmichelle.jdiass@gmail.comRodrigo Sallesrodrigojsalles@hotmail.com
The increasing number of elders in the Brazilian population brings forth the topic of the plurality of aging, incorporating to this topic discussions about gender and sexuality in this stage of life. This research aimed to analyze the life trajectory of elder lesbian women. This is a qualitative field study which included three lesbian elderly women who are part of a non-profit organization in the metropolitan region of São Paulo. We carried out semi-scripted interviews with questions about the trajectory of aging of the participants. Data were analyzed using the procedure of content analysis. The results showed that participants had trouble regarding self-acceptance when it comes to being lesbian. They also faced different challenges to be able to have their affective sexual relations throughout their lives. We found that current social and financial conditions, conquered in old age, allowed more freedom and autonomy to live their relationships. The importance of NPOs and social support in this stage of life was also highlighted.
2025-12-19T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Cadernos de Gênero e Diversidadehttps://periodicos.ufba.br/index.php/cadgendiv/article/view/56160Urban imaginaries and transgender and homosexual groups2025-09-16T05:44:51+00:00Valdir José Morigivaldir.morigi2@gmail.comAna Maria Giovanoni Fornosanagiovanonifornos@gmail.comLuis Fernando Massoniluisfernandomassoni@gmail.com
This paper is part of the research project “Digital Porto Alegre Imaginated”, which comprises an international study on urban imaginaries. The goal of the text is analyze the symbolic components from the citizens’ representations about the Cidade Baixa neighborhood, in Porto Alegre, associated with the presence of transgender and homosexual groups. It uses as a basis the theoretical-methodological framework of urban imaginaries, proposed by Armando Silva. This is a quali-quantitative and descriptive research that presents the official information about the neighborhood and compares it with the results achieved through a questionnaire applied to 160 people from Porto Alegre between April and May 2022. It appears that the place is identified from the occupation of transgender and homosexual groups, becoming an emblem of the neighborhood. This representation is contemporary, but is based on the history of the neighborhood, which was a stronghold of the “Baixa Cidade”, frequented by minority social groups. The representation of the neighborhood as a nocturnal bohemian space legitimizes it as a space of resistance and struggle for rights, as it involves the search for occupation of city spaces. It concludes that the Cidade Baixa neighborhood is represented as a territory of homosexuals and transgenders, representative of the social practices of these groups that are manifested by the joy and bohemia of the place.
2025-12-19T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Cadernos de Gênero e Diversidadehttps://periodicos.ufba.br/index.php/cadgendiv/article/view/66747Solidarity City and Non-Monogamy:2025-04-06T23:57:11+00:00Marcos Sardá-Vieiramarcosarda@gmail.comIvone Maria Mendes Silvaivonemmds@gmail.comReginaldo José de Souzareginaldo.souza@uffs.edu.br
In this article we deal with monogamy as a normative conditioning of desires and affections within the kinship structure, marriages and family relationships, which add symbolic and material values in the way as contemporary society is constituted. We will indicate that these aspects are also associated with material and emotional bonds of attachment and the fear of finitude. Our objective is to reflect on the ways in which monogamy establishes the ideological bases for the constitution of material and urban culture in the appearance and discourses related to the architecture of cities in their constant search for the privilege of exclusivity. We are organized methodologically through ethnographic inspiration and the methods of theoretical review and non-participant observation to analyse the promise of exclusivity and uniqueness in the urban space of Erechim (RS, Brazil). At the end, to counter the constitution of monogamy in material and urban culture in its constant search for the privilege of exclusivity, we argue the possibility of more solidary and detached experiences in the contemporary city based on the greater prominence of non-monogamous bonds and affections.
2025-12-19T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Cadernos de Gênero e Diversidadehttps://periodicos.ufba.br/index.php/cadgendiv/article/view/63446Public policies to address violence against women2025-10-08T10:43:25+00:00Palloma Rosa Ferreirapalloma.rosa.ferreira@gmail.comDiego Neves de Sousadiegocoop@hotmail.com
With the aim of presenting the cycle of the National Policy for Combating Violence against Women, documentary research and bibliographic review were used, covering the overview of the main advances obtained and the consequences of this policy in the social environment. The study was conducted in a public school located in the city of Imperatriz, Maranhão. The objective is threefold: firstly, to understand how gender violence and sexuality are represented in a public school, and secondly, to consider the perceptions of both students and teachers on these matters. The theoretical underpinnings of the research are rooted in the contributions of prominent scholars, including Durkheim (2008), Butler (2022), Bento (2017), Foucault (2014), Louro (2014), and Libâneo (2013), among others. This qualitative study employed two data collection instruments: focus groups with students and semi-structured interviews with teachers. The data collected revealed that students' perceived representations of gender and sexuality violence at the institution under study were influenced by the prevailing social environment, resulting in a naturalized reproduction owing to the absence of discourse on the subject within the school setting. Consequently, teachers' performance in addressing issues related to prejudice and discrimination is hindered by the prevailing discourse of power within the school environment. This discourse is characterized by the naturalization of gender-based violence and a lack of open discussion on the subject.
