VERBAL REALIZATIONS OF THE PERFECT ASPECT BY DOMINICAN REPUBLIC SPEAKERS

In this article, we sought to contribute to the discussion on the syntactic representation of the perfect aspect, which, associated with the present, refers to a situation that occurred or began in the past and has relevance or continues in the present (COMRIE, 1976). Specifically, the realizations of the universal perfect (PU) and the existential perfect (PE) associated with the present in Dominican Republic Spanish (ERD) were investigated. The hypotheses were that, associated with the present tense, in the ERD: i) PU is realized exclusively by the pretérito perfecto compuesto (PPC) and ii) PE is realized exclusively by the PPC and pretérito perfecto simple. For this, elicited production, gap filling and decision tests were applied. Hypotheses (i) and (ii) were refuted, as there were also presente, presente continuo and PPC progresivo in the expression of PU and the periphrasis estar (presente) + predicativo in the expression of PE.
