CRISIS OF DEMOCRACY OR PREVENTIVE COUNTERREVOLUTION? REFLECTIONS BASED ON ARNO MAYER

This article is a study that problematizes one of the main axes of contemporary academic, intellectual and political debate, namely, the crises of democracy. We seek to provide support to argue that more than disruptions to the democratic order faced with the “rise” of the extreme right, we are witnessing constitutive elements of a preventive counterrevolution that took shape after the uprisings in Greece, Occupy Wall Street, the Indignados demonstrations in Spain, the Arab Spring, June 2013 in Brazil and the massive uprisings in Chile in 2019. The point of elaboration structures two considerations: first, we conceptually reconstruct the notion of counterrevolution developed by historian Arno Mayer in the essay Dynamics of Counterrevolution in Europe: 1870-1956; Secondly, we will discuss, using a broad bibliography, the founding moments of our historical, social and political reference framework since the collapse of Lehmann Brothers in the United States in 2008 until the present moment, in order to outline the moments that shape the preventive counterrevolution that afflicts us.
