Abstract

In a context in which volunteering gains importance as a way to make viable the demand for labor generated in the Third Sector for the development of activities, this study proposes to discuss the importance of volunteering in a non-profit entity in Santa Maria, RS. Therefore, as a way to respond to the general objective, the specific objectives used were to analyze the profile of volunteers working in the association, describe the role of volunteers in their daily work in the organization and characterize volunteering as a value for the association studied. It is perceived the need to understand the motivations that lead individuals to share their time and work spontaneously, so the deployment of the method was based on a descriptive research with a qualitative approach, where data were collected for semi-structured interviews. These interviews were based on the framework proposed by Gemelli; Bitencourt and Santos (2015) and tested by Gemelli and dos Santos (2016), who consider the four dimensions of motivation for volunteer work, whose categorization is based on a multifaceted approach to motivations for volunteer work, leaving aside the discussion based on altruism and selfishness. For data analysis, the content analysis technique was adopted, based on Bardin (2011), considering the interpretations that each subject has of the research object, obtaining as the most relevant results the categories personal satisfaction, belonging to the group, development of skills and belief in the organization's goals as motivational factors that drive individuals to volunteer.
