VIRAL LANGUAGE:
GLOBAL METAPHOR AND LOCAL TRANSLATIVE ALTERNATIVES

This paper explores pandemic-related metaphorical transfers from English into Spanish, focusing on divergent cultural associations (Schäffner, 2004). The aim of this study is to put forward translative alternatives to the prevailing metaphorical order of disease is war by localizing conceptual metaphors from the Global South. Its theoretical framework interweaves concepts from Translation Studies, such as modulation (Molina and Hurtado Albir, 2002); the localized vs. the globalized (Bauman, 1991); and ideas from cultural semiotics, such as modeling (Lotman, 2011) and cultural order (Barei, 2006). A critical-descriptive analysis of widely circulated textual configurations and their rhetorical effects is performed. Partial results are presented: two localized translative alternatives together with their linguistic expressions and reflection tools for the translator as well as communication tools to start discussions with industry leaders.
