FROM PARIS TO RECIFE
TRANSLATION PATHS OF PERSUASION, BY JANE AUSTEN, AND CIRCULATION IN 19TH CENTURY BRAZIL

In her study entitled Circuitos e travessias: o caso de A família Elliot (2016), Sandra Vasconcelos states that Persuasion was the only Austenian novel that circulated in Brazil in the 19th century; the novel, translated into French and Portuguese, had its title changed to A família Elliot, ou a inclinação antiga, then crossed the Atlantic towards Brazil and was announced for sale in Rio de Janeiro. This study, whose objective is to expand knowledge about the circulation of the work in the country, shows that in previous years the novel was already circulating elsewhere. This search was possible by tracking the novel in the Hemeroteca Digital. In addition, we seek to point out another Austenian novel that circulated here a few years earlier, in English, and the first mentions of Jane Austen in newspapers of the 19th and early 20th centuries, as well as the first Brazilian translation of Pride and prejudice.
