Abstract

This article aims to discuss dimensions of the father figure as a literary character. The first part of the article turns its attention to the theoretical problematization, especially with regard to the Oedipus complex, seeking to identify instruments that can help in the analysis of the father as a literary character. In the following sections, the article illustrates its analytical potential for literary studies, discussing Catalin Dorian Florescu’s novel Jacob beschließt zu lieben. The analysis is divided into three sections: affective, identity and existential castration. In all three spheres, the protagonist oscillates between yearning for union and castration anxiety. For literary analysis, it is especially interesting to identify the positions of characters with regard to this conflict and the action strategies adopted for its processing.
