Abstract

The research presented in this paper focuses on the works of Leopoldo Lugones, Argentinian writer considered to be one of the originators of the fantastic literature and science fiction in Latin America. We examine some of his short stories presented in the book Las fuerzas extrañas in order to analyze the presence of humor, an aspect yet to be thoroughly analyzed by the critics of his writings. We resort to critics of his works (Paula Speck, Robert M. Scari and Arturo García Ramos) and of works influenced by him (Larry Lefkowitz about Jorge Luis Borges) in order to comprehend the humor not only as an aesthetic element, but as a discursive and argumentative element as well, based on the understanding of Las fuerzas extrañas as a work that expresses irony and parody regarding the science in its time of publishing.

João Pedro Rodrigues de Oliveira é aluno da graduação em Letras na Universidade Regional do Cariri (URCA), Crato - CE. Foi bolsista de iniciação científica com projetos sobre Leopoldo Lugones e Horacio Quiroga e trabalha, atualmente, com questões relacionadas às origens da narrativa fantástica em contos hispano-americanos.

Newton Pontes, Universidade Regional do Cariri

Newton de Castro Pontes é doutor em Letras (Teoria da Literatura) com pós-doutorado pela Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE). Atualmente, é professor adjunto de Teoria da Literatura e professor permanente no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras da Universidade Regional do Cariri (URCA), Crato - CE. É pesquisador na área de Teoria do Conto, com ênfase atual nas literaturas hispano-americanas.
