SHE SPOKE CLEARLY: A STUDY OF ADJECTIVES THAT MODIFY ROOTS

In this article, we analyze a subtype of adjectival modification inside the verbal phrase, exemplified by sentences in Brazilian Portuguese that literally translate as She spoke clear (She spoke clearly). We show that previous works on this phenomenon, specially Lobato (2008) and Leung (2007), contain important intuitions but do not adequately formalize the role of adjectives in these sentences. Following Levinson (2010), we assume that adjectives in such sentences are cases of root modification, in which the root √speak is modified by the adjective clear before being categorized as a verb. This is possible when roots have entities as part of their meaning. Following our theoretical approach, we contrast cases of root modification with cases of modification of categorized constituents.
