Résumé

Este artigo discute o papel do chamado ‘‘terceiro setor’’ ou ‘‘organizações não governamentais’’ nas sociedades contemporâneas, notadamente no enfrentamento das questões sociais. Ressaltando as transformações que levaram a uma crescente valorização dessas entidades, o texto problematiza o conceito, características, potencialidades e limitações das mesmas, com base em uma pesquisa sobre instituições que atuam na área da proteção a crianças e adolescentes marginalizados em Salvador.

This article discusses the role of the so-called “third sector” or “non-governmental organizations” in the contemporaneous societies, especially in facing social issues. Stressing out the transformations that lead to an increased valorization of these organizations, the text calls attention to the problems of concept, features, potentialities and limitations, based on a research on institutions that are active in protecting marginalized children and adolescents from Salvador.
