The mandatory closing of movie theaters during the new coronavirus pandemic not only affected the sector economically, but also intensified the discussion of their survival. The called death of cinema was resumed once again, both in the theoretical field and in cinematographic praxis. The article retraces the theoretical path of the ontological
discussion of the cinema object, recovering the necessary dimension of collective experience
of the activity, as has been pointed out by several authors, such as Jacques Aumont, and Raymond Bellour. To this end, the revisiting of the concept of Jean-Louis Baudry’s dispositif theory is mobilized in a critical key based on the phenomenological recovery of the act of watching films. At the end of the article, it is pointed out that the “spontaneous” proliferation of drive-ins may be symptomatic of a relationship felt
as necessary by the cinema viewer and, therefore, the ontological configurator of the cinema object.
