Technological Monitoring of Probiotics for Human Nutrition

Abstract

Given the rise of the market of probiotic products in recent years, the goal of this work was to track the patent applications of probiotics for human nutrition, at national and international levels. The analyses were conducted in the Questel Orbit® database, applying the term probiotic+ as a keyword, and the filter by International Patent Classification codes related to food, in the period between 2010 and 2020. The main results pointed out the significant increase in deposits worldwide, with China at the top, and the Swiss company Nestle the main holder of these technologies. In comparison with the international scenario, in Brazil, the number of pending registrations is lower and the number of granting of letters patents is higher, a reflection of strategies implemented by the National Institute of Intellectual Property (INPI). The continuous technological advances stimulate innovation and competitiveness in this segment, which reflects a greater variety of products beneficial to the consumer's health.
