Abstract

Cosmetics are among the most innovative products in beauty market, and care with skin microbiota is a trend. Here, we performed a search in the patent database Questel Orbit®, and in the scientific databases PubMed and ScienceDirect, to identify the markets and technologies involving the cosmetic use of probiotics. A total of 115 patent applications were found between 2010-2020, while the number of scientific papers was 48. China is the country with most patent applications, but the European multinational L'oréal, from cosmetics industry, is the main owner of these technologies, including partnerships with the centennial food company Nestlé. Brazil stands out as the second largest cosmetic market and occupies the third position in the ranking of products with probiotics. Given the panorama of growth in innovations of probiotic cosmetics, it is of utmost importance to understand the drivers of the segment to ensure the safety and quality of products.
