Abstract

Innovation is an economic development factor and increases the competitiveness of organizations and countries. It is a dynamical process carried out by many actors who operate in a cycle made of distinct stages related to research, development and diffusion, resulting in new products, services and processes. These dynamics requires different approaches to understanding the innovation cycle. In this context, the network science appears as a possible support. In order to investigate this application, an exploratory research was conducted. The sample was the 49 patents from microbial enhanced oil recovery area, deposited between 1980 and 2016 and collected at Derwent Innovations and Scifinder. A brief approach to this methodology, based on the literature review on innovation, intellectual property and network science, has resulted in indications that innovation cycle can be analysed as a complex system.
