IN THE DISPLACEMENT OF THE LANGUAGES

TRANSLINGUAL AND EXTRATERRITORIAL POETICS IN SHORT STORIES BY CONTEMPORARY LATIN AMERICAN FEMALE WRITERS

Abstract

A common point among contemporary Latin-American writers is the presence of territorial displacements in their life journeys, regarding many of them are migrants, both from Global South à Global North and Global South à Global South, what allows a displacement of languages in the practical lives that also appears in the literary writing, as extraterritorial poetics. From the concepts of literary translingualism, exophonic writing, and the extraterritorial poetics, I aim, in this paper, to analyse, two short stories translated and published in Puñado, a Brazilian magazine of Latin-American contemporary literature: the presence of the geopolitics of powers among languages in the plot of “Água gelada”, by the Uruguayan Vera Giaconi, and the expression of Spanish in the diasporic literature in English in “Memória de Sépia”, by Puerto Rican Dahlma Llanos-Figueroa. The exophonic writing from the spatial displacement thus creates a linguistic and cultural hybridity which decenters identity and puts the subjects in constant process of cultural translation, as well as creates new territorial dynamics.
