Biografia do Autor

José Esteban Castro, Emeritus Professor, Newcastle University Pesquisador Principal, CONICET, Argentina

José Esteban Castro is Emeritus Professor of Sociology at Newcastle University, United Kingdom. He is a Principal Researcher at the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET), linked to the National University of General Sarmiento (UNGS), Argentina, and is a regular visiting scholar at universities in Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and Spain. He teaches courses on environmental sociology, political ecology, the politics of development, and history and sociology of Latin America. He is a Corresponding Member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences. Castro has done research on structural inequality and injustice connected with the politics and management of water in Europe and Latin America and led international projects including DESAFIO (www.desafioglobal.org) and PRINWASS (www.prinwass.org). His current research activities include the DESDEMO Project (www.desdemo.org) and coordinating the international research network WATERLAT-GOBACIT (www.waterlat.org) dedicated to research, teaching and practical action in relation to the politics of water and the environment more generally. His publications include Tension between Environmental and Social Justice in Latin America: the Case of Water Management (co-edited, in Portuguese and Spanish), Brazil, 2017), Water and Democracy in Latin America (in Spanish and Portuguese, Brazil, 2016), The Right to Water as Public Policy: a Theoretical and Empirical Exploration (in Portuguese, co-edited, Brazil, 2015), Water and Sanitation Services: Public Policy and Management (co-edited, Earthscan, 2009; Routledge, 2011), Water, Power and Citizenship (Palgrave-Macmillan, 2006), and a large number of articles and book chapters, including “The challenge of universalizing essential water services in Latin America and the Caribbean”, in P. J. Petri et. al. (eds.), Resilient Water Services and Systems. The Foundation of Well-Being (London, IWA Publishing, in press, 2019).
