AN ANALYSIS OF THE PRESENT PERFECT TENSE IN MEXICAN SPANISH

This article presents and discusses the results of a previous study analyzing how the present perfect tense (PPC) manifests in the Mexican Spanish. This study is based on Generative Grammar, which, in our view, offers an effective explanation for PPC variation in Spanish, considering parametric variation in the features of functional elements (Chomsky, 1995). Following Chomsky (1986), we make a distinction between E-language and I-language, E-language being the language shared by a linguistic community and I-language being the individual's mental knowledge about their language so that each linguistic community can set distinct microparameters. To describe and analyze the PPC in the Mexican variety, we sought to identify the aspectual features linked to the PPC of Mexican variety. This research employs both qualitative and quantitative methods, as the analyzed data serve as a basis for further studies. Data collection was carried out using an oral corpus from the Project for the Sociolinguistic Study of Spanish in Spain and America (PRESEEA). The results obtained demonstrate that the PPC in the Mexican variety presents the aspectual reading [±perfective], therefore, this is the microparametric difference in terms of features in relation to the use of the PPC of the other varieties of the Spanish language, which tend to present the feature [+perfective].
