BETWEEN CARNIVALIZATION AND GROTESQUE:
CONCEPTUAL ARTICULATIONS FOR UNDERSTANDING THE SAMBA SCHOOLS PARADE FROM RIO DE JANEIRO

This essay aims to articulate Mikhail Bakhtin’s (2010, 2018) concepts of carnivalization and grotesque and the notion of grotesque explored on the communication studies of Muniz Sodré (1972) and Muniz Sodré and Raquel Paiva (2002), contributing to the understanding of the elements of the Rio de Janeiro Samba Schools. To this end, the 1989 Beija-Flor de Nilópolis parade and the 2018 Estação Primeira da Mangueira parade will be presented, enabling the identification of traces of carnivalization that inverts roles, demean power figures, and subvert rules. From the concepts of carnivalization and grotesque, such an inversion make it possible to “dethrone” rulers, as well as sacred and elevated images, withdrawing them from their elevated position and featuring them with scorn.
