O artigo analisa a apresentação do retrato de Maria Antonieta en gaulle na Exibição do Salon du Louvre de 1783 e seus desdobramentos. O quadro, pintado por Elisabeth Vigée LeBrun, chocou o público espectador, causando escândalo e condenações variadas, devido ao estilo das roupas e de apresentação pessoal adotado pela Rainha da França na pintura. Questões relacionadas ao corpo, à nudez e à sexualidade feminina fazem-se presentes na polêmica gerada pelo retrato, juntamente com pontos de disputa relativos à distinção das classes sociais e com críticas pessoais à Maria Antonieta e à sociedade de corte. Mais do que apenas uma escolha ruim de estilo, a pintura e seus significados elucidam os debates acirrados sobre a presença e atuação das mulheres na esfera pública, funcionando como um catalisador nas disputas sobre esses pontos na opinião pública às vésperas da Revolução Francesa.
