Scientific and Technological Prospection of the Genus Bauhinia L. (Fabaceae)

Abstract

Bauhinia L. is a genus potentially beneficial to health due to its medicinal properties. In this work, a scientific and technological prospection of Bauhinia was carried out, WIPO, EPO and INPI databases were used for patents, and Scopus, Scielo and Web of Science for indexed articles. The descriptors used were: “Bauhinia”, “Bauhinia AND cancer”, “Bauhinia AND therapy” and “Bauhinia AND diabetes”. From 1.746 articles recorded on Bauhinia, 148 were related to research on diabetes, 95 on cancer and 33 on therapy in general (Scopus). Bauhinia presented a considerable number of patents deposited (WIPO: 694, EPO: 739). It was identified that China has the largest number of patents. B. forficata (n=118), B. bauhinioides (n=29) and B. ungulata (n=20) species stood out in scientific and technological production in the field of herbal medicine. Due to its relevance as source of herbal medicines and species diversity, it is necessary to carry out more research on the genus Bauhinia in Brazil.
