This article analyzes how the identity of the stigmatized individual develops through reflective memory, using the character August Pullman as a case study, represented in the bestseller Wonder (2013) by American author R. J. Palacio. The specific objectives include assessing how the social stigma of August's facial deformity affects his identity and social interactions; examining the influence of personal memories and collective narratives on his self-image; analyzing how memories shape his personal development; and investigating the role of affectionate relationships in his resilience and identity construction. Additionally, the analytical method used is bibliographic in nature, based on the theoretical frameworks of anthropologists Joël Candau (2011) and Erving Goffman (1963), with additional support from Maurice Halbwachs (2006) and Aleida Assman (2011). Considering that this is a piece of young adult literature, the author employs simple, accessible, engaging, and dynamic language, presented through the perspective of a more innocent and childlike viewpoint. Despite the serious themes, the book uses light humor and moments of empathy to balance the narrative, making the reading enjoyable and engaging. The results of this study highlight how memory is crucial in coping with trauma, bullying, and prejudice, emphasizing the essential role of memories and affection in overcoming adversities and constructing a positive and authentic self-image.
