O THE MOST INTIMATE OF CONTEMPORARY HORRORS:
A BRIEF PERSPECTIVE ON NA RAÍZ DE TODOS OS MALES
Abstract
In 1839, Edgar Allan Poe had already warned us that shadows coexist within the familiar, echoing fears and uncertainties that permeate daily life. Centuries later, editors José Duarte and Sanio Santos da Silva brought together researchers from different countries and academic backgrounds to explore the phenomenon of domestic horror and compose a new anthology. Na Raíz de Todos os Males: Terror Doméstico no Século XXI delves into the depths of fear and anxiety present in various contemporary audiovisual narratives, united by the domestic in its various expressions. Throughout its pages, the book leads us through a labyrinth of reflections on the role of the familiar as a setting for horror, exploring themes such as motherhood, queerness, race, and the boundaries between the public and the private. With an interdisciplinary, intermedia, and transcontinental approach, this anthology offers a meticulous and provocative analysis that invites readers to question not only the horrors that dwell in the home but also those deeply rooted in contemporary society.
