Abstract

This work aims at introducing the main factors that cause the deterioration of paper documents from archives and libraries, evaluating their presence on two documents, 604 – “Dôssies sobre a Irmandade, Conventos, Igrejas e Pessoal Eclesiástico/Santa Casa de Misericórdia da Bahia/ Alvarás 1498 – 1684” and 604-1 - “Privilégios concedidos à Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Lisboa e da Bahia, pelos reis de Portugal 1638 – 1817”, under custody of the Public Archive of the State of Bahia, according to the discussions fostered alongside the course Preservação de Acervos Bibliográficos: parâmetros e práticas (PAB), offered by the Núcleo de Preservação of Biblioteca de Saúde Professor Álvaro Rubim de Pinho (BUS) at the Federal University of Bahia. For that purpose we sought the theoretical foundations regarding the theme, based on Norma Cianflone Cassares (2000), Dione Seripierri (2005), Gabriela da Silva Motta Barros (2009), Maria Aparecida de Vries Mársico (2009), Jayme Spinelli, Emiliana Brandão and Camila França (2011), analysing the characteristics of the aforementioned documents.
