SEBASTIÃO
O GUARDIÃO DAS APARÊNCIAS BURGUESAS
Abstract
The present work investigates Sebastião's role in the novel O primo Basílio ("Cousin Bazilio") (1878) by Eça de Queirós (1845-1900) in the face of defending the appearances that maintain bourgeois society in Lisbon. It is intended to analyze this character's performance mainly through his speeches, as the character's figuration occurs dynamically during the narrative. The objective of this study is to verify how the image of the bourgeois family and the ideal wife is sustained in the romance before the community even after adultery, so, with that in mind, it is clear that Sebastião acts in different ways so that the truth about Luísa not be revealed.
