Discourse and gender technologies
Disney princesses beyond entertainment
Abstract
The cultural artifacts of the “film tradition of Disney princesses” record discourses from their times. The film, Snow White (1937),
has patriarchal and conservative discourses, and when compared to the last movie released, Raya and the Last Dragon (2021), there are differences in the discourses of female gender performances. The “gender performance” refers to the ways of “be a woman” that are imprinted in these works, but not a “being” in essence, but a “being” that performs social constructions of gender (BUTLER, 2018). With the methodology of French Discourse Analysis, we will study the gender discourses published by the bodies of the protagonists, in the mentioned films, and we will observe how these artifacts work as “gender technologies” (LAURETIS, 1987).
