Abstract

This article attempts to shed light on the processes of production/reproduction of urban space in Palmas, the designed capital of Tocantins state, Brazil, particularly with regards to housing. Such processes involve acknowledging social and spatial practices carried out by a group of agents who, since the city’s implementation in 1989, have acted to ensure land appropriation, hence underlining their role in hegemonizing political power and in bringing capital accumulation into effect. These social and spatial practices have transformed Palmas’ urban design, producing a city that is dispersed and discontinuous, as well as socially and spatially fragmented.
