Abstract

Significative masterwork of Brazilian literature, “Ancient Tillage” by Raduan Nassar, is a tragic drama about André’s, the protagonist, hýbris to the familiar peasantry order and its impositions. By the way of geographical interpretation based on the humanistic perspective, in particular by the means of the existentialist phenomenology, the essay appoints to an hermeneutical reading of the artwork to reach the understanding of subject-place dialectics. It explores the unraveling of the existential tensions of André’s place through the two moments of the book: “The departure” and “Homecoming”. At the course of the disruption of attachments, the tension begins to be a way of existing at the place, leading to the extreme paternal pathos that deconstructs the familiar order. Key-words: Place, Attachments, Moral order.
