Objective: To learn about the challenges related to safety during cardiopulmonary arrest care in the emergency department of a federal teaching hospital in southern Brazil. Method: Qualitative research, part of the first stage of an applied research project into the technological development of a Minimum Viable Product to aid cardiopulmonary resuscitation using the Design Thinking approach and the Double Diamond method. A total of 30 forms were completed by professionals immediately after resuscitation actions, recording impressions and challenges in the processes from the perspective of those involved. Results: The challenges listed were communication problems (66.67%), conduct errors (33.33%), delays in administering medication (30%) and errors in counting time (23.3%). Conclusion: Communication emerged as a critical factor permeating all the challenges encountered. There was a need for adherence to advanced life support guidelines, team training and the development of technologies to facilitate communication during resuscitation.
