About the Journal

Contemporanea – Journal of Communication and Culture – is a continuously published journal of the Postgraduate Program in Communication and Contemporary Culture at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA).
Published since December 2003, Contemporanea is a forum for disseminating and discussing research on contemporary communication phenomena. Until August 2024, the journal was published quarterly. From September of the same year, the publication of articles became continuous.
Rated Qualis A4 in the area of Communication and Information (2017-2020).

AIMS AND SCOPE
Contemporanea - Journal of Communication and Culture accepts articles, essays, and reviews that promote reflections and theoretical-methodological advances in the field of Communication - Journalism, Advertising and Public Relations, Radio, TV, and Cinema. The journal is published electronically in a continuous format regularly.
For a work to be considered aligned with the journal's scope, it is essential that its object, theoretical or empirical, is a phenomenon in Communication. This implies that the research question and design engage with at least one structuring agenda of the field, considered in all its theoretical and methodological diversity.
La misión de la revista es ser un canal para la comunicación pública de la ciencia, a través de la difusión de trabajos académicos calificados por investigadores en el campo de la comunicación.
Unpublished texts in Portuguese, English, French, and Spanish are accepted. Works published in conference proceedings must have at least 50% new contributions. Submissions must be made by PhD holders, either as sole authors or with co-authors. The journal accepts articles from doctoral candidates, master's candidates, and PhD holders, as well as those from PhD holders. This restriction does not apply to the submission of book reviews, which may be authored by doctoral candidates, master's candidates, and those pursuing a master's degree. All texts are evaluated, anonymously, by at least two members of the Editorial Board or by ad hoc consultants.
PERIODICITY
Since 2024, Contemporanea - Journal of Communication and Culture has adopted a continuous publication model, aiming to add dynamism to the editorial process. In this way, articles are published as they are approved, revised, and formatted. At the end of each year, the Editorial Board and the Editorial are published, highlighting the ad hoc consultants who acted as reviewers and the themes of the articles.
Each annual edition comprises 30 to 40 articles, as evaluated by the primary national and international indexing services for scientific journals in the field of Communication.
OPEN ACCESS POLICY
Contemporanea – Journal of Communication and Culture adopts an open-access policy for its content, based on the principle that making scientific knowledge freely available to the public promotes the global democratization of knowledge. The journal also does not charge any fees for submission, evaluation, and/or publication of articles. There is no embargo period, and registration is not required to access the content.
ETHICAL PRINCIPLES
Contemporanea – Journal of Communication and Culture is a journal committed to research ethics and scientific integrity.
All submitted articles are evaluated for plagiarism using the Turnitin tool. Possible indications of plagiarism will be reviewed by the Editorial Board, which may lead to the immediate rejection of the manuscript.
The journal adopts the position of the Guide for the Ethical and Responsible Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence at the Federal University of Bahia (2025), which indicates that "authors participating in the academic process must explicitly state the type of use and specific contributions of AI tools and technologies to the creation and elaboration of various types of intellectual products, whether technological, artistic, or bibliographic." Therefore, authors who use AI tools in writing a manuscript, producing images or graphic elements, or collecting and analyzing data must be transparent in disclosing how and which AI tool was used.
JOURNAL FUNDING
Contemporanea – Journal of Communication and Culture is entirely funded by the Postgraduate Program in Communication and Contemporary Culture of the Federal University of Bahia (Póscom | UFBA), with resources from the Academic Excellence Program (Proex) of CAPES. Publishing costs include the contracting of specialized editing, proofreading, and editorial support services. Both the Editorial Committee and the Editorial Board, as well as the reviewers, work voluntarily, without any remuneration.
