Abstract

The term “social media” is used in a trivial manner, as if it were a given, of pre-con- tained and transparent meaning, a consensual and unquestionable understanding. But, after all, what is social in social media? In order to debate this question, this article initially discusses the genealogy of other terms with which it holds some kinship: social software, groupware, CSCW and Web 2.0. This paper also reviews the principles and problems of the studies on the Social Construction of Technology. Later, based on Actor- -Network Theory, the concept of social is problematized, as well as the associations between human and non-human actants.
