Based on film criticism and theoretical reflection, this essay discusses the film Stop filming us (Joris Postema, 2020). Co-produced by the Netherlands and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the movie follows the Dutchman Joris Postema in a self-reflective filmic exercise: “as a western filmmaker, a native citizen of a rich European country am I able to use another lens other than the colonialist to film Africa and Africans?” First, the essay interrogates a question widely used by the Dutch director himself: “can I film?” It then reflects on the tensions between a single narrative, stereotype and colonialist discourse, borrowing especially from the studies by Homi Bhabha (2013) and Stuart Hall (2016). In a third moment, the essay treads the tensions between the aesthetics and politics of image (Jacques Rancière, 2018) and, finally, it points to a moment of negotiation (Homi Bhabha, 2013) that allow a spectator experience with the feature film without giving in to essentialist stances.
