Abstract

Introduction: The World Health Organization - WHO considers dental trauma as one of the world's public health problems. These lesions are much more prevalent in the primary dentition compared to the permanent dentition. Any injury of a thermal, chemical or physical nature that affects a tooth is referred to as dental trauma. Objective: To know the prevalence and severity of trauma in deciduous teeth of preschool children from Municipal Centers for Early Childhood Education in Salvador-BA. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was carried out, using secondary data from children aged between 12 and 72 months. The original data collection consisted of: conducting a standardized interview with the mother or guardian of the child and the clinical examination itself. Data were processed and analyzed using SPSS version 18.0. This study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Instituto de Saúde Coletiva at UFBA. Results: A prevalence of 16% of trauma was found in primary teeth, especially coronary fracture (96%), with males being the most affected, as well as the age group of 25-36 months. The most affected teeth were the maxillary central incisors. Conclusion: Considering that the severity of trauma can damage a child's quality of life, it is important to carry out epidemiological studies, as well as the need for public policies aimed at preventing dental trauma in childhood.
