Abstract

This article reflects on the place of pardos in the Brazilian racial debate. To this end, data on racial self-declaration published by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) in December 2022 is analyzed. Then, in dialogue with relevant bibliography, the article discusses the percentage increase in the number of people self-declared as pardo and situates the meanings attributed to this population and its ambiguity in the contemporary ethno-racial debate. For this purpose, a discourse analysis is employed with an emphasis on power relations. Finally, the article concludes that the pardo racial identity destabilizes and enhances a different perspective on the binary racial conception that attempts to classify Brazilians only as white or black, advocating for the recognition and affirmation of a mixed, hybrid, and plural racial consciousness, contributing to the improvement of racial equity policies in Brazil.
