Adoption and same-sex parenting in the film Patrik 1.5

Abstract

This article examines the transition process to adoptive parenthood in a male same-sex couple, through the analysis of a cinematic narrative. Throughout the film Patrik 1.5, we follow the story of a late adoption and the formation of the bond between the parents and the teenage son. Initial joys and surprises in the adoption scenario are addressed, as well as their impact on the marital dynamics of the protagonist couple. Viewing the film as a medium for reproducing discourses that integrate social life, we analyze selected scenes in light of the theoretical framework of Linking Psychoanalysis. We interpret the plots involved in the process of building the bond between adoptive parents and the child, with a focus on the experiences of the couple in the marital sphere, highlighting the tensions that led to a momentary rupture. With the support of the teenager, the couple managed to reconfigure their intimate bond while making room to welcome the new family member.
