PLATÃO REVISITADO POR PETRÔNIO: A DESSACRALIZAÇÃO DA ARTE EM 'SATYRICON' | PLATO REVISITED BY PETRONIUS: THE DESECRATION OF THE ART IN 'SATYRICON'

Resumo

Em Satyricon, dentre outras questões apresentadas, o lugar destinado à arte prefigura um questionamento frequente. Com a constante ascensão em Roma dos “novos ricos”, ridicularizam-se as diversas situações em que a arte é reduzida a uma espécie de subterfúgio para conseguir status. Nesse prisma, buscamos compreender, a partir do sintomático personagem-poeta Eumolpo, os questionamentos suscitados acerca deste valor conferido às artes naquele contexto, percebendo em que medida ele retoma a discussão estabelecida n’A República de Platão em torno da utilidade da arte.

Abstract: In Petronius’ Satyricon, the question of the role of art, among other issues, is frequently raised. With the frequent ascension in Rome of the nouveau riche, the various situations are ridiculed in which art is reduced to a kind of subterfuge to achieve status. From this perspective the poet-character Eumolpus, who is suggestive of this activity, is analyzed in relation to the questions raised regarding the value conferred upon the arts in this social context, with the aim of ascertaining to what extent he engages in the discussion pursued in Plato’s Republic regarding the utility of art.
