Objective: To analyze how the media portrays maternal death due to unsafe abortion. Method: Qualitative documentary study approach. Brazilian electronic newspapers were used as data sources. The data were subjected to thematic content analysis, supported by the webQDA software, through the lens of the gender category. Results: Twenty-seven articles from 16 electronic newspapers were analyzed. Five empirical categories emerged from the analysis: How the media portrays unsafe abortion; Described motivations for engaging in unsafe abortion; The interface between unsafe abortion and healthcare services; The duality of media discourse - between condemnation and women's rights; Gender inequity present in the discourses. Final considerations: The media sustains discourses that condemn women who undergo abortion, based on gender norms. However, a portion of the media emphasizes the importance of protecting women's rights and addresses abortion as a public health issue.
