Concurrent autommune manifestations in patients with AIH

Abstract

Patients with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) present many concurrent autoimmune disorders. We conducted a study in order to describe the occurrence of the concurrent autoimmune manifestations in patients with AIH. Sixty-nine patients with AIH were interviewed and asked about the occurrence of concurrent autoimmune manifestations associated with hepatitis. After them we confirm the diagnosis with the patient’s promptuary. The frequency of the concurrent auto-immune disorders was 23.2% and rheumatic manifestations were found in 8.7% of the patients. Type 1 diabetes mellitus was found in 4,3% of the patients. The frequencies of celiac disease, vitiligo, systemic lupus erythematosus and haematological disorders were the same, being found in 1,4%. In addition, primary sclerosing cholangitis, ulcerative colitis and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis presented, each one, in 2,9%. Screening for concurrent autoimmune manifestations should be recommended for patients with autoimmune hepatitis in order not only to improve the quality of life but also to access the need for additional therapeutic to prevent future complications.
