Abstract

Objective: to understand what people in general know about high blood pressure. Method: exploratory descriptive study, with a qualitative approach carried out in a municipality in the northwest of the state of Paraná. Data were collected from January to May 2023 through semi-structured interviews, audio-recorded after consent and subjected to thematic content analysis. Results: 39 people participated who demonstrated that, in general, they know that hypertension refers to uncontrolled and/or increased blood pressure levels, cited headache, neck pain and dizziness as the main symptoms of hypertensive crisis and pointed out prevention measures , healthy eating, physical activity, and stress control. Final considerations: people have good, but superficial knowledge about hypertension, symptoms, risk factors and forms of treatment, but many neglect to adopt habits that can prevent and/or delay the onset of this health condition.
