iPods e Anti-Flânerie: Estetizando a cidade no século XXI

Abstract

Este capítulo discute o potencial de estetização do uso do iPod na cidade. Ao fazer isso, argumenta que os usuários vivem em uma esfera tecnológica totalmente mediada enquanto usam seus iPods. Epistemologias urbanas têm dado primazia ao papel do flâneur na cidade, enfocando em uma estética visual. Defendo que a estética do iPod – uma estética audiovisual – é exatamente o contrário do flaneurism – incorporando práticas que fazem com que a cidade mimetize o desejo estético do usuário em relação ao flâneur, que imagina-se como o “outro”. Ao descrever as práticas estéticas dos usuários de iPod, também questiono a tese do “fim da estética urbana” personificada nos trabalhos de teóricos que pressupõem a cidade como um lugar de trânsito rápido e “não-lugares”, argumentando que as práticas de estetização são centrais para a compreensão do uso de iPod e que, de fato, seus usuários são capazesde dotar qualquer espaço urbano com significados individuais.

This chapter discusses the aestheticizing potential of iPod use in the city. In doing so it argues that users live in a totally mediated technological sphere whilst using their iPods. Urban epistemologies have given primacy to the role of the flaneur in the city focussing upon a visual aesthetics. I argue that iPod aesthetics – an audio-visual aesthetics – is the exact reverse of flaneurism – embodying practices, which make the city mimic the aesthetic desire of the user as against the flaneur who imagines themselves as the ‘other’. In describing the aesthetic practices of iPod users I also dispute the ‘end of urban aesthetics’ thesis embodied in the work of theorists who forefront the city as a place of swift transit and ‘non-places’ arguing that aestheticizing practices are central to an understanding of iPod use and that indeed iPod users are able to endow any urban space with their own individual meaning.
