osteoporosis – postmenopausal women – periodontal disease.Abstract
With increasing life expectancy, chronic age-related diseases like osteoporosis have become more prominent within society, with a large impact on quality of life. In addition to the well-known effects of postmenopausal osteoporosis on the skeletal structure (bone fragility and increased chance of fracture occurrences), there have also been suggestions in the literature that it might be an interfering factor in the development of periodontal disease and, consequently, tooth loss. Therefore, this study aimed to cover the possible relationship between osteoporosis and periodontal status among postmenopausal women, through an up-to-date review of the literature, highlighting the important aspects of these diseases.
