Abstract

As several aspects of higher education internationalization has gained visibility and signi- ficant importance since the mid-twentieth century, the results of a study on the role of Portuguese academic libraries in this process are presented. A brief literature review on the topic of internationalization in higher education and in academic libraries is made, emphasizing it as an emerging and increasingly important field of study. The Portuguese higher education system is briefly presented to contextualize its academic libraries and to verify that the internationalization practices of these information services are scarcely vi- sible in literature. The results of interviews with the heads of six higher education libraries are presented. Data on the internationalization strategy, human resources involved, in

ternationalization and cooperation activities, users (students and professors/researchers) and funding are discussed. The analysis of personal perspectives from the interviewees regarding the library’s role in internationalization and their views about this concept is undertook. The conclusions emphasize the need for libraries to play a more significant and visible role in the internationalization process of the higher education institution to which they belong.
