Abstract

Female participation in classical music became especially considerable in the 19th century, as a result of its several sociocultural changes. Even though it has been frequently forgotten, Josephine Amann-Weinlich was one of the female orchestra directors who stood out the most at the time, being the first one to create an exclusively female orchestra, named Neues Wiener Damen-Orchester. This article explores Amann-Weinlich and her musicians’s professional career, gathering information about their successes, the gender-based problems they faced and the influence they had on other women. It ends with an intersectional analysis of the social-economic nuances underlying their context.
