Abstract

Facial fractures, when not adequately identified and treated, can cause serious functional and esthetic sequelae. The aim of this study was to evaluate, by means of a prospective study, the incidence index of facial fractures in 108 patients cared for the Oral and Maxilofacial Surgery and Traumatology Squad of Porto Alegre Independência Hospital in a period of 15 months. Based in the results, it was concluded that in the managed patients in the facial traumatology Service, the urban violence (36%), transit accidents (19%) and sports (19%) were the principal etiological causes. There was a higher incidence in males in 20 until 30 - year old people.
