Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the relation cost/use of the two groups of antipsychotics: typical and atypical. The data were collected in the Psychiatric Hospital Doctor João Machado in the city of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte state/ Brazil from 2002 to 2005. The cost/usebetween the two antipsychotics groups is analyzed using the Student t Test (p < 0,05) and the correlation between cost/use for the two groups made with Pearson Correlation (p < 0,05). The difference of cost is significant between the groups antipsychotics (p < 0,0001). The Correlation Coefficient in the cost/use analysis is significant with atypical antipsychotics (p < 0,02). Our study corroborates a public health trend in Rio Grande do Norte State/Brazil that starts supporting atypical psychotic therapeutics.
