Abstract

This article examines the Judean Pillar Figurines (JPFs) in the context of the fall of the Kingdom of Israel and the migration of its people to Jerusalem. It explores the significance of the JPFs in the Deuteronomistic reform myths and their role in shaping historical discourse. Focusing on the Iron Age, particularly the fall of Israel to the Neo-Assyrians (c. 723 BCE), the study highlights the migration to Judah, especially the production and sale of JPFs in Jerusalem to people from the northern kingdom. This trade is interpreted as material evidence of the unification of the northern and southern kingdoms under the crown of Judah, which later inspired Late Deuteronomism. The article argues that material evidence offers a more accurate representation of events, in contrast to later narratives that aimed to legitimize a discourse about the people rather than present historical facts.
