Created in 1952 by psychiatrist Nise da Silveira, the Museum of Images of the Unconscious operates as a center for the study and research of images produced spontaneously in occupational therapy studios. Its origins are related to the creation and preservation of a set of methods and practices developed in a unique way, in a specific territory. The unique characteristics of this heritage are reflected in the museological processes and in the organization of the thematic and chronological series/albums of images. Recognizing the potential of these contents in the reorganization of the human psyche through access to the life history and internal experiences of the individuals who produce them, Dr. Nise created collections but above all she established the parameters for the organization, classification and museological documentation of the collection. A visionary, Nise da Silveira revolutionized brazilian psychiatry and was a pioneer in the field of Museology when she created the Museum of Images of the Unconscious as an image research center. In tune with contemporary museological practices, the Museum of Images of the Unconscious is a space for inclusive methods where comprehensive musealization and participatory museological documentation of collections are considered fruits of its transdisciplinary nature which is an inherent value of the institutional mission.
