Introduction: Rehabilitation with Removable Partial Denture (RPD) promotes
improvement of masticatory efficiency and preservation of remaining
tissues, restores aesthetic, phonetic and comfort to the patient.
However, when conducted in an improperly way, it can result in failure
and damage to the patient. Therefore, improving knowledge about this
subject is essential because it is one of the most important alternatives for
oral rehabilitation in Brazil. Objective: The present study aimed to identify
and discuss, through a literature review, the main causes associated
with failures in oral rehabilitation with RPD. Literature review: Searches for
scientific articles were carried out in online databases, such as Pubmed
(MEDLINE) and VHL (Virtual Health Library), and book titles. 42 articles
were found and 30 were selected after reading the abstracts (excluding literature
reviews). Final considerations: After analyzing and interpreting the
data contained in these studies, it was concluded that the failures were
mostly caused by: Dentist’s attitudes, lack of knowledge and negligence
in the treatment planning process or transfer of responsibility to the Dental
Prosthesis Technician (DPT); inefficient communication between dentist
and DPT; and patient’s carelessness regarding hygiene or commitment
to return to the referral consultations.
