Puberty in Saanen, Anglonubian and crossbreed Saanen x Anglonubian females kids raised in tropical region
Abstract
In this study, the sexual behavior was evaluated at puberty in Anglonubian, Saanen and crossbreed Saanen x Anglonubian female goats raised in tropical region. Thirty female kids, 10 of each genetic group, were monitored from 90 days of age to the first estrous cycle occurrence. The age, live weight, body condition score, inter-estrus interval, ovulation occurrence, length of luteal phase and progesterone serum levels at peripubertal period were evaluated. The Saanen attained puberty earlier than Anglonubian and the crossbreed were intermediary between both breeds (135.4 ± 2.4, 341.5 ± 21.2 and 264.4 ± 18.6 days, respectively). At 90 days of age, the Saanen showed a lower live weight than Anglonubian, however, the crossbreed did not differ from the others. At puberty, the Anglonubian and crossbreed were heavier than Saanen (32.0 ± 1.7; 29.8 ± 0.9;19.7 ± 0.3 kg, respectively). The types of the estrous cycles were 10% short (<17 days), 70% and 80% medium (17-24 days) and 10% and 20% long type (>24 days), in Saanen and crossbreed, respectively. In Anglonubian, 100% of estrous cycles were medium type. The difference in reproductive behavior, at the sexual activity start, among evaluated genotypes, shows the influence of the breed on age at puberty in female goats.Downloads
