Abstract

The aim of this research was to study the characteristics of non pregnant (G1) and pregnant (G2) zebu cow ovaries, raised in the Oriental Amazonia. Three hundred and eleven pairs of ovaries were collected in a slaughterhouse in Araguaína-TO. Then, the length, width, thickness and volume from the right and left ovaries and the diameter of the largest follicle in each ovary were measured and the characteristics of the corpora lutea (CL) were examined. It was observed significant difference for length (cm) of the left ovary (2.03cm) from G1 with the left ovary (2.68cm) from G2 and for width (cm) of the right (1.54 and 2.18cm) and left ovaries (1.39 and 1.87cm) from groups 1 and 2, respectively. No significant effects on volume (mL) and thickness (cm) between the sides or groups were detected. The most CL were included (52.3%). No significant difference on follicle diameter (mm) between the groups was observed. It was concluded that the size and width of the ovaries and the incidence of included corpus luteum should be included in the reproductive tract exam by rectal palpation.
